But we do not need to guess at the results of this ideology. We can look at the existing American welfare state—built under the banner of the Great Society—as the living, functioning prototype of what the DSA wants to scale nationwide.

The Reality of Centralized Dependency: Decades of Great Society programs demonstrate that massive government intervention does not liberate people from poverty; it institutionalizes it. By tying assistance to survival rather than upward mobility, the welfare state has trapped tens of millions of Americans across multiple generations in a cycle of permanent government dependency.

The Benefit Cliff Trap: For six decades, the system has never been designed to provide a genuine hand up. Instead, it operates on a punitive threshold. The moment an individual attempts to better their situation—by taking on extra work, getting a modest raise, or forming a stable household—they hit the benefit cliff. Their assistance is abruptly stripped away, penalizing self-reliance and enforcing stagnation.

The Verdict of History: By any measurable standard—family stability, work participation, or actual economic independence—the welfare state is an abject, total failure. It substituted government dependency for personal agency, transforming temporary assistance into a permanent trap.

The DSA's Exponential Expansion: The platform pushed by the DSA—universal entitlements, total public housing ownership, and centralized economic planning—is simply the existing welfare trap scaled up to encompass every single citizen. It takes the generational poverty already visible in our current system and expands it into an all-encompassing national model.
